We’ll begin with Allison Grimstead and Why Did My Doctor Do That?: Learning to Navigate Medical Decision-Making. How do we make good decisions when we don’t know what will happen next? Operations research is a field that uses mathematics and data to help answer that question. In this talk, we’ll explore how operations research can provide decision support for doctors as a patient’s health changes over time.
Allison is a PhD candidate in Industrial & Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, where she researches mathematical tools for making better decisions under uncertainty, with applications in healthcare. Before graduate school, she worked as an Operations Research Analyst at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, where her work included supporting the federal COVID-19 response.
Next, we’ll journey Inside the Wacky World of Muscle with Eirian Hogan. Ever wonder about what is actually happening inside your muscles? Come learn about the wonderfully weird cell type that makes up skeletal muscle, including how all the internal components of that protein-making factory are controlled by hundreds of bosses (nuclei) and why the heck that happens.
Eirian is a PhD pre-candidate in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan who studies skeletal muscle and aging. In her free time, she loves swing dancing, gardening, and trying new recipes.
Closing things out, we have Amir Baghdadchi with Getting Busy: the Revolutionary Politics of Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day? Does a classic children’s book extolling the virtues of commerce and work secretly outline a subversive vision of the meaning of human endeavor? And what is that worm in a hat up to? We investigate.
Amir is a writer, comedian, and host of The Moth StorySLAM in Ann Arbor. He has appeared at the Pickathon Festival and on the Moth Radio Hour, and was once hired by the San Francisco Bay Guardian to eat at every 24-hour restaurant in the city in a 24-hour period.
